The U.S. government has experienced multiple shutdowns since 1981, with this marking the 11th instance. During a shutdown, many nonessential federal operations are temporarily halted. While some shutdowns are resolved quickly, a few have extended beyond five days. Looking back at those longer episodes, the stock market finished higher in three cases and was essentially unchanged in the other. This history shows that, although shutdowns can be inconvenient, they have not typically posed a major threat to long-term investment portfolios.
